Solar panels represent a solid investment for anyone keen to be green either at home or at their place of business, but it’s important to make sure you factor in pigeon proofing, as these installations provide these birds with the perfect place for them to shelter and make their nests.

While one or two pigeons may not cause you too many problems, when lots start to congregate, you’ll soon see a range of different issues raising their heads. 

Firstly, you may well find that your solar panels start to operate less efficiently because they will likely become covered in dirt, droppings and other bird-related mess, preventing them from generating solar energy.

But the mess is actually the least of your concerns and, in fact, pigeons can cause serious damage to the panels themselves, which could cost you a pretty penny to sort out. Damage can be caused to the internal components of the panels, as well as the exterior, with pigeon droppings causing erosion to wires and the surface of the panels themselves.

However, there is something you can do to prevent this from becoming an issue and there are lots of different pigeon proofing services you can look into. For example, you can have regular inspections carried out so that any nests are removed over time, moving pigeons on elsewhere.

You can also consider installing the likes of bird mesh wire, which attaches to the perimeter of the panels to stop birds from being able to gain access. 

Anti-roosting spikes are another option, stopping pigeons from being able to perch on your roof so they are less likely to set up home. Or you could look into installing a solar skirt, black edging that is installed around the panels to hide gaps and prevent pigeons from being able to get underneath.
