When it comes to pest control, it’s important to bring in a professional and experienced team of specialists to help you get the job done right. This can help prevent infestations from recurring but it can also help protect those on site, since many of the chemicals exterminators use can be very dangerous and even pose a risk to human life.
To help emphasise this point and keep people safe, Tower Hamlets Council has just launched a new awareness campaign Kill Pests Not People, following two separate incidents in the borough that left one woman with life-changing health issues and led to the death of an 11-year-old girl.
The aim of the campaign is to warn people of the dangers of buying pest control products online, as this can make it difficult to tell if the product is suitable for amateur use. It also advises making sure that products are only purchased from reputable UK sellers.
Mayor of Tower Hamlets Lutfur Rahman said: “The products in question are primarily used by professionals to treat house pests, such as bedbugs. It is highly likely that, in the recorded cases, the insecticide was shipped in from outside of the UK and bought from unreputable sellers.
“Pest control products sold in the UK go through rigorous testing to make sure they’re safe for amateur use. When people use pest control chemicals that are only meant for professional use or have been shipped in from outside of the UK, they can harm more than just pests.”
